Borderlandia Tours


Castilla y León: A Medieval Borderlands

We will explore the processes of mestizaje, cultural assimilation and their tangible and intangiable expressions in the Castillian and Leonese medieval borderlands and compare/contrast them back to our bicultural & binational region. Traveling beyond the Reconquista setting of the Castillian plains, we will also visit the distinct autonomous Spanish regions of Asturias and Galicia to understand the cultural impact of this mountainous Christian heartland that led to a social, and political transformation across Iberia and across the ocean to Iberoamerica.

Dates: June 17 - July 1st, 2022

¡Viva Chihuahua!

Chihuahua is an iconic part of the popular consciousness about Mexico because of its role as the setting for complex historical figures and their transformative actions like Padre Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico’s independence harbinger to Pancho Villa, the revolutionary caudillo figure. Visiting the northern state’s namesake capital today with skyscrapers rapidly scaling up along its expansive cityscape, it is easy to be swept up by the city’s dynamic modernity but one can rest assured that the community’s foundations are proudly grounded in its regional Chihuahuense heritage.

Cananea to Ures: Sonora's Heartland

This small-group trip follows the Rio Sonora from its source in the north in Cananea to the old state capital of Ures. We’ll visit the three-century-old ruins of the Cocospera mission, explore the origins of the Mexican revolution in the mining community of Cananea, experience the downriver communities of Arizpe, Banamichi, Huepac, and Aconchi. In Ures, we’ll visit a traditional Sonoran sweet maker, get close up to the immense wheat mill to grasp this important economic heritage to the river valleys of the Sierra Madre Mountains, and become familiar with the state of Sonora’s regional history museum with its impressive murals.

Tacos HMO: El Tour

Find yourself in the epicenter of Sonora’s culinary scene in Hermosillo eating tacos with the creators of Tacos HMO: Una Guia Minima, the capital’s taco guidebook. Gastronomy is the focus of the itinerary but exploration of the dynamic city and its heritage will weave together the culinary experiences of Hermosillense taqueria culture.

Join us in this walking tour of Nogales, AZ. Discover the geographic importance and biculturalism of the border community during this visit to the Arizona (US) half of Ambos Nogales. The itinerary explores the heritage behind the commercial and migration crossroads and offers interpretation of the contemporary challenges at diverse reference points within the cityscape.
