“Thursday, we started with a 9:30 am city walk with Alex La Pierre (bookable through local experiences on Airbnb and also on his website borderlandia.org). Little did we know the awesomeness that was in store. His knowledge of the history/area is encyclopedic and he really gave us a fascinating glimpse of how Tucson came to be (he also gives tours of Tubac and Tumacacori nearby). If you’re interested in history/architecture/urban renewal, this is a not-to-be missed experience.”

“We just had an incredible (and educational) culinary tour to Hermosillo Mexico. What made it exceptional was the professionalism of Alex La Pierre and his team at Borderlandia. He helped us to discover this wonderful city in northern Mexico and learn more about the history we all share. The culture, entertainment venues, marvelous cuisine, and friendly people were reminiscent of a visit to Paris or Barcelona. Right in our own backyard! Here's the website for future tours. “Why can't the world be filled with more people like Alex? Cliche you say? That's fine, you can keep thinking that. Meanwhile, I will be going on another tour with Alex.

Alex reminded me of what it means to be a polymath, a renaissance man, someone who just loves to learn for the sake of learning. In a world of hyperspecialized people, it is not every day you run across one of these people. He is a historian by academic training, but he knows where he fits in history, can explain how it evolved, the impact on people, the land, the politics, and where you sit in the middle of it all. And I feel like that is only scratching the surface of who he is.

Some tours are...well...just tours. Others are experiences, things you don't really want to forget, maybe can't forget, because they change you after you see the world in a new way. Alex's tours are like dropping that red pill; you won't' see the borders the same way, riparian zones, Pancho Villa, or national historic landmarks. You may want to start making your own flour tortillas, go to an Apache grave site, or go to Nogales to take an adobe workshop. If you want someone to talk at you, as you scroll on that mindless newsfeed on your phone, skip this tour. If YOU engage, YOU get back everything you wanted out of a tour + (n^n). That was my experience at least.

“¿Por qué no se puede llenar el mundo con más personas como Alex? ¿Cliché, dices? Está bien, puedes seguir pensando eso. Mientras tanto, haré otro tour con Alex.

Alex me recordó lo que significa ser un erudito, un hombre renacentista, alguien a quien le encanta aprender por aprender. En un mundo de personas hiperespecializadas, no todos los días te encuentras con una de estas personas. Es historiador por formación académica, pero sabe dónde encaja en la historia, puede explicar cómo evolucionó, el impacto en las personas, la tierra, la política y dónde encajas en medio de todo. Y siento que solo se está rascando la superficie de quién es él.

Algunos tecorridos son... bueno... solo recorridos. Otros son experiencias, cosas que realmente no quieres olvidar, quizás no puedas olvidar, porque te cambian después de ver el mundo de una manera nueva. Los recorridos de Alex son como dejar caer esa píldora roja; no verás la frontera de la misma manera, las zonas ribereñas, Pancho Villa o los hitos históricos nacionales. Es posible que quieras comenzar a hacer tus propias tortillas de harina, ir a una tumba Apache o ir a Nogales para tomar un taller para hacer adobes. Si quieres que alguien le hable, mientras ves las noticias sin sentido en tu teléfono, omite este recorrido. Si TÚ participas, TÚ obtienes todo lo que quieres de un recorrido + (n^n). Esa fue mi experiencia al menos.

Definitivamente seguiré yendo a más tours con Alex”.

“This is a must for anyone interested in the fascinating history of Tubac. The route was well planned out, passing a number of the historical houses and buildings, including the private cemetery. The walk to the river and the description of the ecology was an added bonus. Alex is well versed in not only the history of Tubac, but the entire span of Spanish exploration and settlement of the area and how this lead to further expeditions. I am very interested in other tours by him.”
