Editorial

Welcome to the new edition!

November is here, finally bringing a refreshing drop in temperatures to the Sonoran Desert. I’m writing this as we prepare to head to Álamos, a colonial mining town nestled in Sonora’s Dry Tropics, for a special celebration with our travel companions.

With October behind us, Mexico and the world are honoring Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), and we’re heading to one of the oldest cemeteries in the state to participate in this shared borderlands tradition. To highlight this occasion, we’ve included an article exploring the origins of this cherished celebration in Mexico, a topic we recently presented at Tubac Presidio State Historic Park.

For those in Arizona who haven’t yet experienced Álamos, it’s truly worth a visit for so many reasons. Every visitor we know has been enchanted by its charm. That’s why we’ve planned a special Valentine’s Day trip for our guests in February, hoping to coincide with the bloom of the amapa trees. Also, as a subscriber, you’re the first to hear about our new intercultural programming, so be sure to check it out in this edition!

In other news, our son, Julian Santiago, turned three months old, and as first-time parents, we’re completely wrapped in love for our little one, whose smiles melt our hearts. We’re grateful for the support of our family, especially the grandmothers — ¡Que vivan las abuelas! Their presence and helping hands are truly irreplaceable. We’re looking forward to celebrating our first Thanksgiving and Christmas together as a family.

Wishing you happy upcoming holidays, and we hope to see you soon!

Alex
