Chihuahua is an iconic part of the popular consciousness about Mexico because of its role as the setting for complex historical figures and their transformative actions like Padre Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico’s independence harbinger to Pancho Villa, the revolutionary caudillo figure. Visiting the northern state’s namesake capital today with skyscrapers rapidly scaling up along its expansive cityscape, it is easy to be swept up by the city’s dynamic modernity but one can rest assured that the community’s foundations are proudly grounded in its regional Chihuahuense heritage.

Castilla y León: A Medieval Borderlands

We will explore the processes of mestizaje, cultural assimilation and their tangible and intangiable expressions in the Castillian and Leonese medieval borderlands and compare/contrast them back to our bicultural & binational region. Traveling beyond the Reconquista setting of the Castillian plains, we will also visit the distinct autonomous Spanish regions of Asturias and Galicia to understand the cultural impact of this mountainous Christian heartland that led to a social, and political transformation across Iberia and across the ocean to Iberoamerica.
