Dear Friends,

Happy Fourth of July!

With the passing of June 24, the feast day of Saint John the Baptist in the Catholic calendar, we are officially in Monsoon season in the Sonoran Desert! To our delight, we have already been frequently blessed in Arizona’s Santa Cruz Valley with rains and we are looking forward to seeing our beautiful surroundings take on a verdant green color.

This annual tradition of marking the seasons and festivities by honoring saints or religious deities goes back to even before the arrival of Europeans in the borderlands. We invite you to learn more about this important mestizaje, or cultural fusion, embodied in the tradition of el Día de San Juan in our infographic featured in this edition.

Another upcoming celebration with deep roots in Sonora takes place in early August in Huépac, a community in the middle of the beautiful Río Sonora Valley. Las Fiestas de San Lorenzo, honors Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of Huépac, who is feted for over a week’s time, including community activities, such as the evening Paseo de la Marmota, and religious rituals which date back to pre-Hispanic times as well as influences from Medieval Spain.

If you are feeling Summer Sonoran cabin fever and want to get out with the slightly cooler temperatures, overcast skies, and monsoon showers, we’d like to invite you on our next trip to the Río Sonora region from August 8-11, 2022  to partake in these special festivities. You can register here for this cultural exchange and you will even have the rare opportunity to learn the recipe behind La Posada del Río Sonora’s Chiltepín Flan in a cooking workshop during the heat of the day.

Mexico City’s magnificent Chapultepec Castle.

We recently returned from a visit to Mexico City and Puebla (that was over two years in the making - delayed) to visit friends who live in the capital city. We took advantage of the visit to scout out two new Borderlandia Trips to offer you in the near future and be announcing dates in the next edition of Borderlandia Magazine.

¡Saludos!

Alex & Rocío
