500 Years: The First Circumnavigation of the World

Join us for this talk commemorating the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world by the Magellan Elcano Expedition from 1519-1522. The story of this expedition to the Spice Islands, which ended up circling the globe, is one of the most incredible in the history of humanity. Find out who were some of the important personalities of the expedition, how many ships and persons set out from Seville, Spain in 1519, and how many returned in September of 1522. You’ll learn about the political intrigues of the time between Portugal and Spain, mutinies, the fate of Magellan, and how the expedition was seen to completion by a Basque mariner, Elcano, a figure worthy of much more historical attention.

Álamos Tour - December 2022

There are only two places open for this trip!

Immerse yourself in colonial Mexico in the beautiful pueblo mágico of Álamos, Sonora. Located in the far south of Mexico’s second-largest state where it meets both neighbors, Chihuahua and Sinaloa. The town, which blossomed from a seventeenth-century mining strike, is set amidst the dry tropics, a unique ecological zone characterized by multicolored flowering trees and arboreal cactus forests. We’ll connect with local residents for tour of both the local nature preserve (attention birders!) and the historic community of La Aduana with its beautiful stone temple and peaceful town center.

Dates: December 1 - 6, 2022 (5 nights / 6 days)

Sign up here or join our Álamos wait list for future trips!
