A Long Strand

There’s a Mexican saying that reads something like “One always returns to the place they were happy at”. And it’s true. After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, it was the first time I could attend the opening of an exhibition at a place close to my heart, the Regional Museum of Sonora in Hermosillo, where I worked for more than a decade.

“Una larga hebra” (A long strand), was the first big temporary exhibition held on these spaces in 2022 with an extraordinary curatorial work and a heart wrenching theme. The author, Yucatecan artist Elena Martínez Bolio, along with the work of mayan artisans, created a collection of more than 125 textile pieces to speak out about the problems women face, like violence, inequality, and daily-life abuse but also an exposure of their traditions and knowledge.

The author makes a sensitive homage to late INAH Anthropologist and activist, Raquel Padilla Ramos, in the third anniversary of her sudden departure, with a special piece created for this exhibit.

If you have a chance to stop by the capital of Sonora in the upcoming months, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this great display. It will be shown until April 30, 2023. Write us an email to set up a private tour.
