Editorial

Hi friends,

I’m writing this as light snow is dusting over the Arizona-Sonora borderlands. It is always a spectacular, yet surely fleeting sight, given how late in the winter season we are. The golden splashes of the earliest Mexican poppies beckoning the coming Sonoran spring were all retracted this morning as if stunned by this icy surprise.

Borderlandia received another stunning surprise at the beginning of this year with a mention in the New York Times' annual list of 52 Places to Go in the World in 2023 (see the article in this edition). We were delighted to see Tucson at a top ranking of 15 and had no idea we would be included until the morning of the article's digital publication.

This being the cool season in the Sonoran Desert, we have been busy carrying out our program (including some wonderful day trips to Magdalena de Kino), seeing out our mission, and scouting future borderlands itineraries including a visit to Rocky Point and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Pinacate and the Altar Desert. Stay tuned to our next edition of the magazine for dates and details on how to register for that trip.

We hope you enjoy this winter edition of the magazine we made!

Our best,
Alex & Rocío

P. S.  We invite you to celebrate St. Patricks Day with us at our public history presentation on the San Patricio Batallion and the Mexican-American War in collaboration with the Tubac Presidio on March 19. Be sure to say hi if you make it out.
