Borderlandia Tours

¡Viva Chihuahua!

Chihuahua is an iconic part of the popular consciousness about Mexico because of its role as the setting for complex historical figures and their transformative actions like Padre Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico’s independence harbinger to Pancho Villa, the revolutionary caudillo figure. Visiting the northern state’s namesake capital today with skyscrapers rapidly scaling up along its expansive cityscape, it is easy to be swept up by the city’s dynamic modernity but one can rest assured that the community’s foundations are proudly grounded in its regional Chihuahuense heritage.

Dates: March 30 - April 7, 2022

Cananea to Ures: Sonora’s Heartland

Get to know the culture of the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora with Borderlandia. This small-group trip follows the Río Sonora from its source in the north in Cananea all the way to the old state capital of Ures. We’ll visit centuries-old missions, explore the origins of the Mexican revolution in the mining community of Cananea, and experience the downriver communities of Arizpe, Banámichi, Huépac, and Aconchi. Take a break from technology and join us as a travel companion to this calming, beautiful rural landscape and also take part in its delicious traditional Sonoran cuisine with us.

Dates: April 25-28, 2022

Castilla y León: A Medieval Borderlands

We will explore the processes of mestizaje, cultural assimilation and their tangible and intangiable expressions in the Castillian and Leonese medieval borderlands and compare/contrast them back to our bicultural & binational region. Traveling beyond the Reconquista setting of the Castillian plains, we will also visit the distinct autonomous Spanish regions of Asturias and Galicia to understand the cultural impact of this mountainous Christian heartland that led to a social, and political transformation across Iberia and across the ocean to Iberoamerica.

Dates: June 17 - July 1st, 2022
