New Tours for the Summer/Fall!

We have great news for you, Borderlandia friends! We have added four tours to our 2022 Summer/ Fall schedule. Check them out!

Fiestas de San Lorenzo:

A Cultural Immersion in the Río Sonora Region

Every year in August, the community of Huépac in central Sonora celebrates the municipality’s fiestas in honor of the pueblo’s patron saint, Saint Lawrence. Huépac is located a few kilometers just downriver from this immersion’s accommodations in Banámichi. This festivity offers a chance to have a personal encounter with the Sonoran culture and folkways of the valleys of the Sierra Madres.

Take this opportunity to get to know our Sonoran neighbors who are delighted to share their traditions as well as the natural and cultural heritage of their land with visitors. We’ll learn about our natural and historical interconnectedness with this region in Arizona and notice the contrast in the solemnity of the religious traditions and the jubilation of the celebrations.

We will be staying in Banámichi, Sonora for the 3 nights of the tour.

Dates: August 8 - 11, 2022

Álamos

Immerse yourself in colonial Mexico in the beautiful pueblo mágico of Álamos, Sonora. Located in the far south of Mexico’s second-largest state where it meets both neighbors, Chihuahua and Sinaloa. The town, which blossomed from a seventeenth century mining strike, is set amidst the dry tropics, a unique ecological zone characterized by multicolored flowering trees and arboreal cactus forests. We’ll connect with local residents for tour of both the local nature preserve (attention birders!) and the historic community of La Aduana with its beautiful stone temple and peaceful town center.

Dates: December 1 - 6, 2022

¡Viva Chihuahua!

Chihuahua is an iconic part of the popular consciousness about Mexico because of its role as the setting for complex historical figures and their transformative actions like Padre Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico’s independence harbinger to Pancho Villa, the revolutionary caudillo figure. Visiting the northern state’s namesake capital today with skyscrapers rapidly scaling up along its expansive cityscape, it is easy to be swept up by the city’s dynamic modernity but one can rest assured that the community’s foundations are proudly grounded in its regional Chihuahuense heritage.

Dates: March 10 - 16, 2023

Puerto Peñasco &
El Pinacate:

Volcanoes, Sand Dunes & Sea

Did you know that there’s a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve a few miles from Arizona? El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve was designated by the United Nations in 2013.

See both turf and the surf of northwestern Sonora on this special visit to the Sea of Cortez and the UNESCO Pinacate Biosphere Reserve.

With local connections, we will spend one day getting to know the Gulf with a tidepools visit and estuary excursion, and on the second day visit the interior lands of the biosphere reserve. We will also enjoy the local gastronomy and get to know the people who live in Rocky Point.
