I’m writing this as light snow is dusting over the Arizona-Sonora borderlands. It is always a spectacular, yet surely fleeting sight, given how late in the winter season we are. The golden splashes of the earliest Mexican poppies beckoning the coming Sonoran spring were all retracted this morning as if stunned by this icy surprise.

This past November I had the opportunity to fulfill a dream to visit Segno, the birthplace of Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino. Padre Kino was a Jesuit missionary who imparted a significant impact on the cultural landscape of the region where we live, the Arizona-Sonora borderlands, known to him as the Pimería Alta.
